Before supermarkets. Before plastic wrap. Before everything was the same everywhere — there were crate labels.
This is an original Halloween fruit crate label — a 1940s lithograph produced for Barr Packing Co. of Sanger, California. It has never been used. Never folded. Never attached to a crate. It is New Old Stock in excellent condition, found in the original unused factory stock at the Barr Packing warehouse.
The label is extraordinary. A bright orange jack-o-lantern grins in the center, a full moon glowing behind him, the silhouette of a witch on her broomstick cutting across the sky. And if you look carefully at the bottom left corner — there is a small black cat watching it all. This is the oldest and most desirable version of this Halloween label, predating the era when weights and measures were required on packaging.
Frame it as Halloween decor, display it in a collection, or use it in a craft or scrapbooking project — framing is recommended to maintain this condition. At 8.0 by 5.0 inches it fits a standard 8x6 or 9x7 frame beautifully. Two available.
A wonderful gift for a Halloween enthusiast, a seasonal decor collector, a crate label collector, or anyone who appreciates the unexpected intersection of produce packaging and holiday magic.
A note on crate label collecting: Original lithographic crate labels from this era are increasingly scarce. NOS examples like this one — never used, never folded, in original unused condition — represent the best of what survives. Collectors prize them for their graphic quality and the window they open onto a vanished chapter of American agricultural and commercial history.
